Case Study:

Kick Start your career in the Health Sector

It’s forecast that in the next few years, the Gippsland region health sector will experience staffing increases of 18 per cent across all services. Couple this with current regional skill shortages and unemployment rates, and there’s an opportunity for change. The Gippsland Regional Council project, Strengthening Pathways for Adult Learners in Gippsland, has this conundrum covered.

In a Gippsland first, Learn Local Noweyung Ltd partnered with Central Gippsland Health to develop an eight-week pre-accredited and customised health program giving unemployed/underemployed people first-hand experience of the health industry. The program pathways into accredited education and employment.

Results to date are outstanding. Students are skilled-up in areas including communication, literacy and financial literacy. Hospital staff volunteer their time to provide demonstrations and meet with the students. Students are reporting that they got more out of it than they imagined. Out of 15 enrolled students, 14 went on to further studies or gained employment. Noweyung and Central Gippsland Health have gone on to win the 2018 Victorian Learn Local Collaboration Award.

Other Learn Locals are now providing this course in partnership with other health providers across Gippsland.

Quotes attributed to the course:

“This partnership will help people become aware of what employment is available in the health sector and also provide them with pathways to further education and training if they choose.”

“The program fitted perfectly with the Central Gippsland Health charter, which includes a commitment to assist the socially disadvantaged in the community. It demonstrates that if organisations can cooperate in these types of innovative models, we can make a difference in helping people who are keen to get into the workforce.”
— Dr Frank Evans, CEO, Central Gippsland Health (CGH)

What the Students had to say …

Anthony: “It was a worthwhile program; we got more out of it than we can imagine, and it’s a course that needs to continue. There’s a lot of people out there who need the opportunity like we’ve had and should be able to get the opportunity.”

Trish: “For me it was really good because I was a stay-at-home mum for 10 years and I had lost my confidence. The eight weeks of building your skills backup and knowing that I do have those skills and that I can get back into the workforce was invaluable, for me it was a refresher”
